Solar Hot Water
How Solar Hot Water Works
Solar Energy is absorbed by flat plate collectors that face south and taken - via safe, food-grade glycol - to an internal heat exchanger in the tank. The number of collectors and size of tank will vary depending on your home site and individual family usage. HOW IS BACK-UP HEATING PROVIDED? In cloudy conditions, back-up heat is provided with one or two electric elements, situated inside the solar tank. This way, you will never be without hot water. This is an automatic back-up system, and no action is required on the part of the homeowner. HOW MUCH WILL I $AVE? There is currently a federal tax incentive that provides a credit of 30% of the total cost of your solar hot water installation, with no cap! In addition, WV just established a solar tax credit of 30% of installed cost, up to $2,000. You can view all state incentives at www.dsireusa.org. Once there, click on your state for relevant info. WHAT DOES THE SYSTEM REQUIRE? Southerly exposed roof/surface/side of building for the collector(s) and space for, and access to the solar tank. WHAT DOES IT COST? The cost of installation ranges from $8,500 to $10,000. A solar domestic hot water system will usually pay for itself in five to seven years.
