Energy Efficiency

Did you know… that according to the U.S Department of Energy, the typical U.S. family spends about $1,900 a year on home utility bills? Unfortunately, a large portion of that energy is wasted. And each year, electricity generated by fossil fuels for a single home puts more carbon dioxide into the air than two average cars, and accounts for 67% of all U.S. oil consumption. The good news is that there is a lot you can do to save energy and money at home. Mountain View Solar & Wind offers a comprehensive Home Energy Analysis service and Weatherization program that takes a whole-house approach, by viewing your home as an energy system with interdependent parts. For example, your heating system is not just a furnace—it's a heat-delivery system that starts at the furnace and delivers heat throughout your home using a network of ducts. Even a top-of-the-line, energy-efficient furnace will waste a lot of fuel if the ducts, walls, attic, windows, and doors are not properly sealed and insulated. Taking a whole-house approach to saving energy ensures that dollars you invest to save energy are spent wisely. Typical Home Air Leaks

The EPA estimates that homeowners can typically save up to 20% of heating and cooling costs (or up to 10% of total energy costs) by air sealing their homes and adding insulation in attics, floors over crawl spaces, and accessible basement rim joists. Our 5- point plan addresses the key areas of typical energy loss by:

  1. Sealing rim joist
  2. Increasing Attic Insulation
  3. Duct Sealing
  4. Sealing around windows & doors
  5. Installation of programmable thermostat

Our trained professionals inspect your home and make recommendations as to which measures would be most effective. The homeowner can do some measures easily, while others may require the help of a professional. Energy-efficient improvements not only make your home more comfortable, they can yield long-term financial rewards. Reduced utility bills more than make up for the higher price of energy-efficient appliances and improvements over their lifetimes. In addition, your home could bring in a higher price when you sell. Currently (through December 2010) there are tax credits available for these weatherization programs. There is an important difference between a tax credit and a tax deduction. A tax deduction is subtracted from income before total tax liability is computed. On the other hand, a tax credit is subtracted directly from the total tax liability. This means that a deduction and a credit have very different values, with a credit being three or more times more advantageous to the taxpayer than a deduction. For example, a tax credit of $500 for someone in the 28% tax bracket is equivalent to a tax deduction of $1,785. Visit http://www.energyrgysavers.gov/ for more energy-saving ideas.
