Late last night West Virginia (Mountain View Solar more specifically) became home to its first all electric vehicle: the Nissan Leaf. Never heard of it, you say? Let me fill you in...

When you think "all electric vehicle" what comes to your mind? Probably words like "small", "weak", "cramped", "bare", etc. etc. I know, mine too. Those thoughts vanished this morning when our fearless leader, Mike McKechnie, pulled into the office in a surprisingly stylish, mid-size silver number called the Leaf.

So everyone poured inside to see what this thing consisted of, as Mike promptly popped the small outlet cover in the front of the car and attached one end of a large power cord to the car, the other end to an outdoor outlet. On the top of the car we delightfully found a solar panel that powers the windshield wipers, radio and lights. There are many who attach solar power to the Green Movement. It is true that our company is comprised mostly of very green-minded people, and that our renewable energy company grew out of a green building company. It is also true that today's solar industry is as much about energy as it is about green. It is a special kind of energy though. It is the kind that an individual can actually own.
While solar energy is green, renewable and sustainable, part of the beauty of today's solar is ownership. That is why a retired coal miner from southern West Virginia had us install a solar hot water system last year. He is proud of his work as a miner, and proud to own part of his energy now. A similar story is true for our install of the week.
